By road from the north Tauranga is 218 kilometres from Auckland, a journey that takes about three hours by road. State Highways 1, 2 and 27 are generally excellent all the way with good passing lanes and sign posting. A choice of small towns dotted along the way provides a good opportunity for refreshments or sightseeing. There are two routes to Tauranga from the north: Route 1: Karangahake Gorge From Auckland, follow State Highway 1 south (southern motorway) then turn off on to State Highway 2 signposted to Tauranga. Follow this road through the small towns of Ngatea and Paeroa and drive through the Karangahake Gorge until you reach Waihi Township. From here drive south through Katikati and Bethlehem until you reach an expressway leading into Tauranga. Academy Motor Inn is the first luxury accommodation you'll see on the cnr of Cameron Road and 15th Avenue. Route 2: Matamata From Auckland, follow State Highway 1 south (southern motorway) then turn off on to State Highway 2 signposted to Tauranga. Continue on this road until you reach State Highway 27 and follow the signs to Matamata. From here you will pass through Kaimai-Mamaku forest park where you should follow the signs to Tauranga. By road from the south Rotorua is a 40 minute trip away on State Highway 2. From Gisborne, through the Waioeka Gorge, take State Highway 2 towards Opotiki, keep following State Highway 2 signposted to Tauranga. This journey takes about three hours. By bus or shuttle service Professional coach companies operate throughout the north island, offering an efficient bus service between main centres. Tauranga, Bay of Plenty’s main city, is linked to several other towns by a large network of bus transport. A number of companies also operate daily door to door pick up shuttle services between Tauranga City and Auckland and other centres. Many have pick ups from the airport, enroute towns and the outer suburbs.
