Bay of Plenty

The Bay of Plenty is one of New Zealand’s biggest tourist destinations, with its unending white sandy coastline great for surfing and safe for swimming. Not only that, numerous inlets and bays provide the perfect place for relaxing and enjoying the holiday of a lifetime.

Sightseeing

Tauranga and Mount Maunganui are renowned for sports orientated aquatic activities from ironman and surfing competitions to ocean jet boat racing and international yachting stopovers.  Home to New Zealand’s largest export port and a thriving cosmopolitan lifestyle, Tauranga and Mount Maunganui see more than 40 cruise ships enter their harbour each year.  These tourists are just a few of the many visitors who take part in everything from the laidback café culture lifestyle of the Mount to the wonderful sights and scenes of Rotorua’s thermal wonderland.

Rotorua with its spectacular geysers and geothermal activity is the cradle of New Zealand’s tourism and attracts visitors from around the world.  Its numerous lakes also draw trout anglers and those wishing to admire the stunning scenery on offer.

Marine Adventures

The Bay of Plenty’s waters are internationally renowned for world record game fishing catches including big marlin, kingfish, tuna and many other species of fish. Whale and dolphin watching are popular activities where it is not rare to see pods of orca fairly close into the shore or in the harbour itself.

White Island, an active volcano with unique attributes and well known for its fabulous scuba diving adventures, is located only an hour’s drive along the coast from Tauranga and The Mount.  Daily tours leave from Whakatane, a small historical New Zealand town rapidly gaining popularity.

Temperature

Temperature-wise, the weather is mild most of the year round, with quite hot summer months between January and April. The sunny climate is ideal for growing avocados, kiwi fruit, citrus and other subtropical fruits for which the region is renowned. In fact, Te Puke, official home of the kiwifruit, produces more than 40% of New Zealand’s overall production of the internationally recognised delicacy.
